William's Story
Life
Born in Lorain, Ohio and moved with Army father. Lived in Ft Lewis, WA, Ft Knox, KY, Ft Mead, MD, Ft Dix, NJ and Clearwater Beach FL before moving to Sheffield Lake at the age of 9. Stayed there for 11 years until I joined the Air Force. Stationed in San Antonio, TX twice, Montgomery, AL, Panama City FL, Tokyo Japan, Valdosta, GA, Clark AB, Philippines, Biloxi, MS, Lompoc, CA, Kaiserslautern, Germany, Ft Worth, TX, Agana, Guam and Del Rio, TX.
I've been married three times. The first time in the Philippines. I have twin sons, one other son and and adopted daughter from that marriage. Five grandchildren.
The second time I married another military member and had three step-children. 6 step grandchildren.
Present marriage I have 3 step-children and one adopted daughter, the one that I raised. 2 grand children & 8 step grandchildren and 8 step great grandchildren.
We are currently living in Brooklyn, OH and spending weekends in Sheffied Lake at our cottage at the OVI.
I volunteered as a WELBELOS Den Leader for the Cub Scouts from 1977 to 1978 at Ramstein AB, Germany - Three Rivers District (Rhein Nekkar Saar) of the Trans Atlantic Council. From 1979 to 1980 in Ft Worth, TX - Three Rivers District changed to Trinity Trails of the Longhorn Council and last 1980 to 1983 NAVCAMS WESTPAC Guam with the Chamorro Distric of the Aloha Council.
I have been very active in Veteran matters.
My major hobby is geneology and belong to quite a few hereditary societies including:

Workplace
Besides my military jobs, I've worked at Republic Steel in the 10 in bar mill in Cleveland, as a dispatcher with the Del Rio, TX Police Department, and 16 years with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services as a Disabled Veteran Outreach Spec working at times in both Lorain and Elyria.
Military
After basic training and Medical Tech School I was assigned to Tyndall AFB in Panama City, FL where I was assigned to a Surgical Ward where I cared for various types of surgical cases. Dealt a great deal with terminally ill patients and discovered that not everyone who goes into the hospital comes out alive. Toward the end of my assignment I was assigned to the Emergency Room and provided a wide range of emergency and non-emergency care. ties as well as some disease patients. I flew the line from Saigon, Cam Rahn Bay and Da Nang in Vietnam to Okinawa, Tokyo, Philippines, Guam, Wake Island, Honolulu, HI, Ankorage, AK, East St Louis, IL, Washington, DC, Dover, DE, Wrightstown, NJ, San Francisco, CA San Antonio, TX and Charleston, SC. Sometimes making the east cost turnaround in less than three days. Wounds covered the whole range from burns, quadri and para plegics, colostomies, penetrating fragment wounds of the brain, loss of eyes and just about any type and combination of missing body parts you can imagine. Built up almost 3000 hours and 70 combat support mission in two years.
Reassigned to Moody AFB, Valdosta, GA where my twins were born. Worked as shift supervisor in the Emergency Room. Because of our physician shortage, I did exams, diagnosis and treatment of routine cases and only sent those on that were beyond my capabiity. Wrote prescriptions under supervision of the doctor.
Reassigned to the Jungle Survival School at Clark AB in the Philippines where I was an independent duty medic. Accompanied students and instructors to the field rendering aid as needed. Our training are was on the side of Mt Pinatubo, at the time thought to be an extinct volcano. In 1991 it erupted and became one of the biggest eruptions of the century. The area that wasn't blown away is now under nearly 600 ft of ash. Trained in the administration of snake serum for some of the deadliest snakes (fortunately, I never had to use it). Drove to a Negrito (Pigmy) village once a week and provide medical care to the residents. Performed demonstration on the use of a personal lowering device and use of the forest penetrator and lift up into overhead helicopter. The last stronghold for the Japanese Imperial Army on Luzon was in our training area. We unearthed a large number of artifacts as well as skeletons which were returned to their government for inclusion in a large monument to their missing soldier and sailors.
Reassigned to Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland AFB, TX where I was given charge of a 29 bed abdominal and vascular surgery ward. Patients were moved out to a step-down unit when they got down to 2-3 tubes. Patients on this ward were of such a nature that it was referred to an ICU without a sign. Lots of cutting edge technology and experimentation. Left there and moved to the Emergency Room where I placed in charge of the ambulance section.
Retrained into peronnel assigned to Vandenberg AFB, CA - Officer Records, then to Ramstein AB, Germany - Outbound Assignments, back to the medics at Carswell AFB, TX in charge of a ward and then moved to the Flight Surgeons Office in Physical Exams. On to Guam in Physical Exam and Standards and finished up in Personnel at Laughlin AFB, TX as Noncommissioned Officer In Charge, Quality Force Section.
