William's Story
Life
About 50 years in a few sentences.
After graduating from Central High School, I went to Northwestern University. I started out in Electrical Engineering, but switched my major to Civil Engineering in my Sophomore year. After receiving my BS in 1962, I stayed on at NU to get a MS. I finished all of the course work in 1964. I finished my thesis in 1968 and got my MS in Civil Engineering, with a major in Urban and Regional Planning. I was married in 1962.
I worked in Tulsa OK from 1964 through 1972 at the Tulsa Metropolitan Area Planning Commission first as a transportation planner and then as Chief of Long Range Planning. We had both of our two children while in Tulsa, a boy and a girl.
We moved to Toledo in 1972 where I became the Director of the Toledo area Transportation Study. I moved up through the ranks and became Executive Director of the Toledo Metropolitan area Council of Governments in 1992. I retired from that position in 2000. Being bored, I took the position of Executive Director of the Chittenden County Metropolitan Planning Organization in April of 2001...Expand for more
. It is the transportation planning organization for the greater Burlington VT area. I retired from there in December 2005. We moved back to Toledo on July 1, 2006.
My wife taught nursery school, kindergarten, and first grade, and was also a church organist. She retired from teaching in 2003 when she moved to Vermont (We had a long distance marriage for two years!). She was also a church organist in Vermont playing a historic old organ.
My son, David, went to Ohio Wesleyan University and graduated as an art major. He is currently the Director of Exhibitions and Collections at Northern Kentucky University. He is unmarried, having been married twice and currently having a girl friend. My daughter also graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with a major in Politics and Government. She worked for the Lieutenant Governor of Ohio, then the Ohio Chamber of Commerce, and is now in Southern Pines NC as the Vice-President of the County Chamber. Her husband is the City Manager there.
My sister Barbara still lives in Grand Rapids. Both of my parents passed away several years ago.
