William's Story

After High School, I went to college for a while, then joined the Army. After the service I went back to school and earned both a BS and MS in Engineering, and an MBA. As an engineer my work brought me to many places. I was able to experience lots of wonderful and memorable adventures as well as make many new friends. I retired in 2000 at the age of 58 due to complications of a bout with cancer. In December 1999 I was operated on for cancer and given two weeks to live. I went thru a lot of radiation and surgeries which did their fair share of damage but I surprised the doctors and lived. Here it is many years later, and I feel great. I'm in good health now and no more cancer. I reside in Columbia, South Carolina. It is a wonderful place to live. Great weather, no snow, low cost of living, nice people and lots to do. I enjoy spending time boating and fishing on Lake Murray, playing cards, going to hear live music and see live shows. I enjoy cruising plus traveling to Central and South America often. The different cultures there are so interesting and the people are very friendly. Most of all I enjoy spending time doing things with friends. I attended the University of South Carolina majoring in Ceramics. As a senior citizen in South Carolina, attending any public university is free so I decided to go back and do one of the things I love doing which is throw wheel pottery.. Helen and I also love to take cruises. We try to take 3-4 of them a year. (Covid-19 has stopped that for now, but hopefully cruises will start up again soon.). We have had the pleasure of visiting many places through out the world and as long as we are able we'll continue to do that. Over the years in our travels we ...Expand for more
have met so many nice people and have made many good friends. I am a grandfather (23) and a great-grandfather (5) I have a daughter lisa who lives in Seattle, WA., A daughter Tammy who lives in Sumter, SC, and a son, David who lives in Excelsior, MN. Overall, life has been very good. I remarried in June of 2010. My wife's name is Helen. She was a widow and has 4 children and 13 grandchildren all living here locally so our combined family is large. We bought a beautiful home that was new for both of us and that had a lot of room for family and guests. As with everyone, sometimes life throws you some curves and some not so good times. Somehow, we find we get through those, pick up the pieces, and continue on only to find life gets even better. I went with my wife to her high School's graduating 50th year class reunion. What I saw was a bunch of old people who had lived a good part of their lives already, but after a few minutes of getting reacquainted, age seemed to go away. That made me think of all of you. None of us are getting any younger and those of us that are still left have lived a good part of our lives already and have raised our families and had our careers. I'd love to hear from you and renew some old friendships and maybe start some new ones. If you ever find yourself living near here, visiting this area or passing thru, email me at ceramicartist at iCloud dot com and I will give you my phone number so we can talk and we can hopefully get together. Even if you aren't close, I'd still love to hear from you. We do get down to Florida often since that is where most of the ports are where the cruise ships leave from. Be well, enjoy life and all it offers, know you are in my thoughts.
