William (Bill)'s Story
Life
Well where to start? It is hard to believe that 40 years have passed since we graduated from High School. Although some days it seems like yesterday that I was doing Wheelies on my Motorcycle up and down the road in front of the school with Marilyn Standish, now Mavity, on the back of my 350cc Yamaha. With Marilyn on the back we could do a wheelie all the way around the city beach or for over a mile on a straight road. Those were the days!!
Right out of High School I went into the Air Force and spent 22 wonderful years serving my country before I retired on the 1st of November 1989. I was stationed three places remote away from Marilyn, Naha Okinawa, Azores Portugal and Clear Air Force Station Alaska. Marilyn planned on marrying an Air Force Sergeant and seeing the world. She has been to Fairchild AFB, Spokane Washington, Malmstrom AFB, Great Falls Montana and Offutt AFB Omaha Nebraska. Not what she expected!! It is amazing we have been married for 37 going on 38 years!!
My most exciting times in the Air Force were working special access programs and my claim to fame was the fielding of the B2 Stealth Bomber. I headed the team that helped design the on-board computer security system and the physical security required to house the B2 bomber at Whiteman AFB in Knobnoster Missouri.
After leaving the Air Force I went to work for a Government Contractor (Now BAE Systems), where we are currently responsible for the hardware and software integration of all STRATCOMs war fighting computer systems. I have worked for the same company coming upon 18 years. I am a Program Manager and Systems Engineering Manager responsible for 95 systems engineers and 3 multi-million dollar programs. I ...Expand for more
plan on retiring in 4 years. Marilyn would say 8 but I told her that 22 years in the Air Force and 22 years at BAE is enough.
Marilyn and I have one child, Coleman, who was born after 17 years of marriage. He will be a junior at the University of Nebraska, Peter Kiewit Institute, majoring in Computer Science and Management of Information Systems. He spent the summer as an intern at the Union Pacific Railroad working in the Information Technology Area.
Marilyn and I love to cruise and I have been on 23 cruises and Marilyn has been on 26 or 27 I loose track. Every two years we do a group cruise we call the Friends of Bill M; we are happy drinkers with a cruising problem, not the Friends of Bill W, who are happy cruisers with a drinking problem. We have had as many as 141 folks on the cruise with us and the next cruise is January 2009, and we already have 110 folks signed up. CRUISE ANYONE!!
My favorite pass time besides cruising is golfing and I try and do that as much as I can. My lifes ambition was to own a house on a golf course and we built one 5 years ago on Eagle Hills Golf Course in Papillion Nebraska. We live just off the 7th fairway, which is a dogleg left. 15 windows in 5 years prove that you cant always cut the dogleg!! It is a beautiful view; we call two lakes and a beach (2 water hazards and a huge sand trap).
I finally went to college after 20 years in the military and have a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice, Bachelors Degree in International Business and a Masters Degree in Management. If I had known that college was that easy, I would have went earlier and would have retired from the Air Force as an Officer instead of an Enlisted Senior Master Sergeant.
