William's Story

I was born in Saxonville, Massachusetts, to Roscoe B. and Winifred Rose (Treadwell), Sargent. I attended schools in Saxonville, Millis, Mass and Dorchester Mass, and then we moved to Maine in 1961, where I attended Unity-Freedom Academy, i.e. Unity high School. I was a member of the class of 1964, I married Elsie Gerry, at age 19, and divorced at age 24, and as life would have it I joined the Army. I went to Viet Nam in 1970 and in December of that year we A Company 7th Engineers (Combat) 1/5th Mechanized Infantry Division) built the Red Devil high way from the Rock Pile to the Laotian border, creating the access into the Ho Chi Min trail, and allowing the South Viet Nam forces access into Laos. We remained there until April 6th of 1971, when we returned to our base camp at Quan Tri. We provided mine sweeps for the infantry and tank units assigned to the 1/5th until August of that year when the 1/5th stood down. (1/5th Mechanized Division) returned to conas). I was then assigned to The 26th Engineer Battalion (Combat) of the Americal Division at Chu Lai, South Viet Nam. Returning home in December of that year and was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood Missouri with the 5th Engineer Battalion, I then went to Texas and joined a Tank Division, and was latter discharged with a medical discharge, I had sever damage to my lungs, from Agent Orange. After leaving the Army I went to work for the City of Abilene Texas in 1978 in the Public Works Division as an Engineering Technican, and then I returned home to Maine in 1984 and stayed until 1988, when I returned to Texas. I have two children that live in Maine. My oldest daughter and my name sake son live in Detroit and Dexter. They have given me six beautiful grand children, whom I love dearly. Then I have my Son Robert a Sam Houston State University graduate, he is a Computer specialist in Spring Texas. Then I have my two youngest ones of whom lives in Huntsville, Texas, while they attend Sam Houston State, my daughter will complete her Masters in Psychology soon and my youngest son is in the U.S. Army stationed in Hawaii. I don¿t have a million dollars in earthly money, but my riches lye in my children; they are my reward for having lived a decent life. My riches lye in Heaven and my blessings are in my children all of whom have honored me with having led decent and respectable lives themselves. I have been a very fortunate man; I have been an ordained minister for a lot of years and have served God both as Father and Sheppard. I have had the blessing in the past few years to have provided witness to inmates in the prison system and given them the Word of God.
