william's Story

FIRST: Our fellow classmate, Denise Kiely ( now Johnson), has been in the ICU at Marlboro Hospital x 6 weeks...she developed pneumonia, then had a cardiac arrest, from which she was resuscitated. She then developed renal failure, had to have three chest tubes placed, and has been slowly improving. Denise and I are very close; our grandmothers and mothers grew up together; Denise and I grew up next door to each other, too! PRAYERS AND GOOD WISHES ARE WELCOME..SHE WAS JUST TRANSFERRED TO LEONARD MORSE/KINDRED ICU FOR VENTILATOR MANAGEMENT, SO SHE WILL BE THERE FOR A WHILE !!!! Where did the last FORTY years go? I graduated from Bowdoin College, then from Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences--->internship/residency at Naval Regional Medical Center, Oakland, CA, then Critical Care Fellowship through Bay Area Health Consortium (UCSF, Navy and Army hospitals), then back to Oakland as Chief of Critical Care for several years. Moved to National Naval Medical Center and completed Digestive Disease/Liver Disease fellowships; then became Consultant to the Attending Physician, U. S. Capitol (took care of members of House of Representatives, Senators, 7 of 9 Supreme Court Justices, and "certain residents and staff" of the White House. After 13 years in the USNavy, moved to West Palm Beach, FL, and became Chief of Medicine at new VA Hospital x 6 years. Active duty and VA opportunities were all incredible; travel opportunities great, and the people I met and worked with were the best! Our vets deserve the best care available !!!!! Moved to Cape Cod in 2001, to care for Mom and Step Dad; opened a private practice in Hyannis, MA; in 2005, o...Expand for more
pened a Surgery Center with two colleagues.....multiple awards for patient care and satisfaction, etc. for our center (Cape and Islands Endoscopy Center, LLC). Sadly, diagnosed with widely metastatic adenocarcinoma in June 2012; sold my practice; now focusing on being a patient at Dana Farber Cancer Institute ! I never missed any of the recommended health screenings; was a runner for 30 years, etc., but crap happens anyway! Very, very fortunate to be married to my best friend, Paul, since 2004; we met in Medical School, and have been together for THIRTY FOUR YEARS! We have been helping to place dogs in "forever homes" for several years (with agencies from Rhode Island and Connecticut); also, have been raising Bouvier des Flanders (Belgian herding dogs) for many years; my Dad started this, and we have continued for more than twenty five years; we also have had many rescue dogs, and continue to do so (right now, miniature dachshund and chihuahua; dachshund rescued from a puppy mill in TN, and chi from hurricane Katrina). So, life has given me an unplanned kick, yet I am hopeful for some more time here! Lucky to get to Delray Beach, FL, which is a great place to visit and live; try to get here every few months. Can't really do too much due to side effects of experimental chemotherapy, yet every day is a gift! Not sure I will be here for reunion , yet wish EVERYONE the BEST !!! Heh, SUE SOKOLOSKI, how are you???? You always made me laugh!!!! Also, best to Kim Greenawalt...I made his days such a challenge....Kim, you'll be glad to know that I became a card-carrying liberal after I got to Bowdoin College !!! Best regards to all! Bill
