William's Story
Life
Then: avoiding any physical exertion.
Now: deciding whether to lift weights or roller-blade today. (Okay, after my cat tried to kill me and broke my ankle, I don't do the roller-blading, so I have to content myself with the treadmill at the gym. BORING!!)
Then: avoiding confrontation.
Now: daring you to disagree with me.
Then: being quiet.
Now: talking to lots of people at once.
Then: hiding in the shadows.
Now: being in the spotlight.
Then: afraid to be laughed at.
Now: making us all laugh at ourselves.
Then: not knowing where to go.
Now: telling other people where to go -- and making them like it!

Workplace
Out of college I worked as the music teacher in an inter-disciplinary pre-school reading readiness program in an inner-city school. Unfortunately the program worked; after review the program was judged ineligible for federal funds because reading scores improved too much. (Thank you President Reagan!) I taught junior high general music for a while and was sort of relieved when I was laid off, and went to get my Master's in Musicology. Then I got seduced by A...Expand for more
nglican Choral music and started singing in the choir at Christ Church, Binghamton. In an odd twist of fate, since I had choral conducting experience, I ended up as choir director. Then I was offered a job at WSKG Radio, but the hours conflicted with choir rehearsals and services, so I had to leave.
Fast forward fifteen years and I'm Classical Music Director and mid-day host at WSKG and back as choir director at Christ Church. It's the best of both worlds. Neither one pays royally, but the people I work with make up for it: sometimes it's like I'm living in a really smart sitcom.
With the choir we laugh as much as we sing; people ask me what I do for fun and I say "I go to church."
And I always look forward to going to work at WSKG because I know I will have lots of fun with my co-workers and bring great music to my listeners (who are mostly fun themselves -- except for a few psychos, but that's what you get when you are on the air!)
I also work with the Summer Savoyards, the local Gilbert & Sullivan group and the living embodiment of the Island of Lost Toys, and sing with the chorus of the Tri-Cities Opera. In the recent production of CARMEN I played Lilas Pastia -- I think that's Spanish for "walking prop table."
And, YES, I'm still a smartass. Who knew?
