William's Story

After High School I attended SFU and then grad studies at U of Calgary in Environmental Design, graduating with an architecture degree in 1981. I obtained professional registration as an Architect in BC and spent several years with a number of firms in BC and Alberta. In 1988 I formed my own firm, Cairns and Steward with U of C classmate Joe Cairns. In 1991 I moved to the Cayman Islands and have been with the firm Chalmers Gibbs Martin Joseph ever since. In 2004 I became Managing Director and joint owner of this company. Our projects include banks, office structures, hospitals, airports, residential complexes shopping centres and hotels. Since growing up and becoming responsible, I have not lost my interest in playing music. Formative years of playing in stellar groups such as The Elastic Band led me to eventually play jazz piano, Hammond B3 organ and more recently various other instruments including pedal steel guitar, lap steel and dobro. I currently have various jazz projects underway and have played some steel guitar on a few recordings by local musicians. At the moment I am forming an organ trio rythm section to play funk, jazz fusion and r&b....as well I am also undertaking to learn shakuhachi (Japanese flute)and sitar. My wife Pat, just retired as an accountant with a Cayman bank, just returned from participating in a volunteer program in India (her 4th trip). She has an active interest in drama and recently has directed 'The Rise and Fall of Little Voice' and 'Anne of Green Gables' and will be working on upcoming productions for the 2009 season.
