William's Story

On August 19th of 1979 I went to New York City marticulated (as we say in the marticulation business) at Fordham University where I graduated four years later with a double maejor in Latin and English. At that time I fancied myself a playwright and convinced others of the same to the point that I won a minor playwrighting award. I also worked at Macy's (in one of their restaurants) and taught high school. After two years living hand to mouth, I decided to go to graduate school. I ended up at the University of Southern Mississippi, the only English Department that would allow me to study Ancient Greek as my "foreign language," and a school that happened to have a good creative writing program. I spent the next eight years (1985 to 1993) in Hattiesburg earning various advanced degrees, reading many good books, coming out of the closet, becoming an activist, making many friends, having the kinds of experiences of which novels are made. After graduate school, I moved to New Orleans to write my dissertation. There I worked in a bookstore in the French Quarter had my version of a nervous break down and returned to Hattiesburg, where I worked in a diner as I finished the dissertation. Ph.D. in hand I returned to Little Rock (1995 / 1996) where I worked at Barnes and Noble as I tried to figure out what to do next. That turned out to be library school, which involved a move back to Louisiana, this time to Baton Rouge, which is just like New Orleans, minus the charm, i.e. violent, poverty stricken, and blase about both of those. I received the MLIS from LSU and was hired by LSU (where I had worked as a graduate student) Libraries, working there for 3.5 years in the Reference and Collection Development Departments, picking up along the way six cats (I already had one) and a dog (also had one of those). I also lived with a possum for a time. In July of 2001, after five years in Baton Rouge, I answered the siren cal...Expand for more
l of the Midwest, lured by a high salary and what I perceived to be interesting colleagues. I have stayed in Macomb (imagine nowhere, now drive to the middle, you are there) Illinois ever since. The salaries are high (we are unionized--thank God and Marx--and my colleagues have proven to be as interesting in real life as they appeared to be in the interview. I enjoy living in small towns (see Hattiesburg above) and have become involved in volunteer work (am President of the Hospital Auxiliary), my church (president of the Parish Council--but this happened by accident or divine intervention. I certainly had no intention of being president of the Parish Council, but...), am active in our faculty union (Secretary), and in campus GLBT and Feminist activism. Despite my best efforts (or because of them) I am single. I live with my friend Elisa and her boyfriend, Adam, with 10 cats (six are mine) and two dogs (both mine). My passions in life are friendship, my pets, photography, and, apparently, going to meetings for this and that cause. I have had several brushes with serious depression, but would describe myself as happy enough to write that I am happy enough, which is, on balance, not bad. I have maintained a sense of the absurd, which is useful in academia. When not at work, I can usually be found in bed with a book, a dog, and a cat or two--or at a meeting or working out at the Y--though I have to tell you I really hate working out. I admit the necessity of working out if one is not going to let one's body go utterly to hell--and religiously go, but what a bore. When not doing those things, I am to be found out to dinner with friends or at one of the way too many social events that make life here a blur. Yes, the middle of nowhere is not only picturesque, but also has a social life out of a busy Victorian novel. As to the future--I have no idea what it holds for me. I suppose I will find out soon enough.
