William's Story
Hello, If you remember I was one of two boys at the school with long hair. I had dirt blond hair down below my shoulders. Troy was the other. I was kicked out in the eleventh grade for not telling the names of two individuals selling pot on the football field. I lived in Lakeside since the 7th grade. I went to TDS. Now, after looking back. TDS is a great school. Absolutely stands out above the others. I moved modular classrooms for 12 years; and, I saw thousands of schools so I know. El Cap is a great school also. I was out of place in that red neck environment. I did not care. I had my group of friends. We all lived at the top of Tierra Del Sol and Saddle Ridge. We were the wildest bunch of kids in the whole valley. The memories I have from those times I reflect on all the time. Do you remember the flood. Lindo was out into the Safeway parking lot. Me, my brother Ray and Rodney Hughes swam across the San Diego river by the bridge Hwy 67 bridge. This was after the torrential rains had let up but the river was as wide from bank to bank. We swam it both ways. Going the first time wasn't so bad. We started on the school side. The current carried us down river as we swam. Coming back we tried to make it to where we started. What a mistake. It almost took all our lives.; but, we made it. We felt like men that day and totally sapped of all energy. The school would never let me swim with any of the teams because of my long hair. The chicks could do it but n...Expand for more
ot the guys. I was the strongest swimmer in the school too. I was always at the Mission Beach surfing and had very strong skills. I challenged the entire staff to a bet. I would race one race with all the best swimmers from the teams; and, if I won I would not have to cut my hair to join the teams. The coaches would not do it. We all lost that year. The school and myself. Stupid the way grown-ups think at times. The coaches never encouraged me for anything. They looked at my long hair and left me alone. Sad the way a school will turn its back on a kid, A KID! That was the way I went through school at El Capitan. Leeway, what a piece of work he was. He took a personal effort to single out me and my sister Tammy to drum us out of school. Then after I was kicked out he followed me into my personal life telling my friends and my friends families what piece of sh!^ I was and that I should not be around their children. A grown man who was the principal of the school with a grudge against kids. He was an evil man. Today, I am doing great. I work for myself. Yes, when millions of people are unemployed I create my own income. This is good. I have my own house, truck, travel the world. I have a third degree black belt in the art of Shao-lin Kung Fu. I don't touch drugs. I might have a beer once in a while but not even weekly. I saw the Meth destroy many many people in Lakeside; and, you can still see it today. I had to leave there; and, I am better off for it.
