Willie's Story

Life I was born in Pine Bluff and attended Dollarway High School. I finished High School near the top my class and attended Arkansas AM&N (now UAPB) on both choir and acadenic scholarships. I earned my degree in accounting in 1978 and was recruited to work for IBM in San Jose California. After working for IBM San Jose for 2 1/2 years in various finance and accounting positions, I then accepted an opportunity to transfer to IBM in Austin, Texas. It was here I accepted my first management position and have been in managerial positions of increasingly higher responsibility since then. I earned a Master's degree in Management (HRM) in 1988 from Houston Baptist University. I left IBM in 1995 to accept a career opportunity at Apple Computer Inc, Austin Texas, where I initially managed three accounting departments plus the Financial Planning and Analysis function within the Controller's dept. My final position at Apple was Sr. Regional Manager, responsible for the Americas Region ( U.S., Canada, Mexico, and South/Central America). After 17 years with IBM and 20 with Apple, I retired in Feb 2015. I am happilly married to a wonderful woman, Diana, and we have three children who are all grown, employed and living on their own (Thank God!), one grandchild, and one grandchild on the way. My outside interests include a position as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Amplify Federal Credit Union (> 1 Billion $ in assets), UAPB Alumni Assoc., Alpha Phi Alpha, and various activities within Wesley United Methodist Church. The single and most consistent influence within my life has been my belief in Jesus Christ. It has been this belief that has guided all of my decisions and actions through the years. I truly believe that what ever decisions or actions have resulted in this small measure of success I have been afforded were not due to my own wisdom and efforts, but through the Lord guiding me. I firmly believe in Proverbs 3:5-6, "Trust in the Lord with all your hear and lean not ...Expand for more
unto thine own understanding. Acknowledge Him in all your ways and He will direct your paths". What most surprises me about how my life has turned out thus far is the amount of traveling I've been fortunate enough to enjoy, mostly through work but also many personal trips. I've had the opportunity to visit several cities in Africa, Italy, France, England, Ireland, Belgium, Spain, Greece, Germany, The Netherlands, Portugal, Mexico, Canada, Costa Rica, Brazil, Japan, and Tahiti. I've also toured 26 of our 50 states, including Hawaii and Alaska. I never thought that after growing up in a disadvantaged area of Arkansas, that I'd have an opportunity to see even a fraction of the places I've seen. My ultimate goal in life at this point is to make a difference in the lives of those I can and to leave the world a better place than when I found it. School Ahh, yes!! Those were the days. I still have fun/vivid memories of Raymond setting a trash can on fire in math class, the jokes told on the back of the bus while returning from those long basketball trips, J.J., Ms Devoe and Mr Kearney...the coolest teachers ever...anywhere, choir engagements during the Christmas season, the French Club trip to Six Flags over Texas, sneaking into the drive-in movie in the trunk of a car, hanging out at the Chik'n Shack with boys from the hood, Ms. Pierce's "brain on alcohol" jar that she passed around to her students on the first day of science class....it doesn't get any better than that!! College College was a great experience for me. Not much time for partying given the demands of fulfilling academic and choir scholarships plus working part-time, but I loved the lifelong friends and associates I developed. The choir tours were fun. Traveling the U.S. and performing in various cities for two weeks each year was an experience I won't forget. Phi Beta Lambda, Alpha Kappa Mu, Co-perative Education Club, University Jaycees and Vesper Choir all introduced me to freindships which I still treasure today.
