Windy's Story
Life
Windy Elizabeth Johnson started her life in Boulder, Colorado on the 24th of January 1975. She was born during a windstorm and thereby was given her name because of the weather. As a baby, her family was voluntarily homeless (job hunting) until they located near Flagstaff, Arizona when she was 10 months old. In July of 1976 her family moved into her childhood home on the corner of Kendrick and Dale streets in downtown Flagstaff (324 North Kendrick Street).
She attended Marshall Elementary School for K-6th grades. She then attended Flagstaff Junior High School for 7th and 8th grades. During her first semester of 9th grade (1989) she lived with family friends, Dick and Jean Hoffman, in the house at 714 Locust Street, Windsor, Colorado as a Âdomestic exchange student. During Christmas vacation she returned home and was in the first freshman class to be located at Flagstaff High School since Flagstaff Junior High School had been turned into Flagstaff Middle School.
Windy was very involved in high school and was in band, orchestra, choir, soccer, and national honor society her senior year. Windy started playing the tuba her senior year in high school and fell in love with the low brass sound. She has only played in community groups and is definitively a hobby musician, but thoroughly enjoys playing when she has the chance. 1993 saw Windy graduate near the top of her high school class. Windy does not think of herself as particularly bright and she credits her diligence more than her intelligence for her successes.
After volunteering to clean the spit out of trumpets Windy ended up as an apprentice in woodwind repair with Lowell Taylor of TaylorÂs Tubas starting at age 17 (1992). After being accepted to Red WingÂs band instrument repair program and on their three-year long waiting list, she attended the local university (Northern Arizona University) for 2 years. During her sophomore year at NAU her mentor decided to move and Windy had a choice bet...Expand for more
ween unemployment or self-employment as there were no other repair technicians in Flagstaff at the time. So at age 19 she started her first business named ÂWindyÂs Woodwinds. Windy attended Red Wing Technical CollegeÂs Band Instrument Repair Program in 1995-1996.
Windy returned from Red Wing in time to do some emergency repairs for NAUÂs summer music camp and then went on a location hunt. Her second business was named ÂWindyÂs Winds and was originally located above the back door of DominoÂs pizza in the Sherwood Forest Shopping Center (1535 ½ South Milton Road).
She converted from no religion to being a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the winter of 1998. She was baptized on the 22 of May 1998. In July of 2000 the business was moved to her home in downtown Flagstaff where it was put into the apartment in the back of the house at 324 ½ North Kendrick Street. In the summer of 2001 she completed her BachelorÂs of Arts degree that was started in 1993 and graduated with a degree in Liberal Studies (B.A.i.L.S.) with Math emphasis and Music focus.
In the fall of 2001 she fell in love with her friend, Benjamin Nephi Shaffer. The had a delightful courtship and were married on the 22nd of June 2002 in the Saint George Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for time and all eternity. They both moved to 559 West 200 North in Cedar City Utah to start their marriage. Windy moved the business and Ben was a full time student at Southern Utah University.
She gave birth to her first child, Elnorra Elizabeth Shaffer, on the 4th of February 2005.
In May of 2005 the family moved to Taiwan just after her husband graduated from Southern Utah University with a BachelorÂs degree in History with a minor in Political Science. Ben is currently an English-only kindergarten teacher and Windy is a full-time mom. She is expecting her second child in April of 2007.
