Winston's Story

I had the unique and truly amazing fortune to have attended TWO really GREAT high Schools: Burges High School in El Paso Texas while my father was stationed at Ft Bliss Texas and Saks High School in Anniston, Alabama, while my father was stationed at Ft McClellan (which I think is now closed). Burges was a great school and I had some truly fantastic friends there. In the middle of my junior year at Burges, my father was assigned to ft McClellan, Alabama near Anniston. It was tough leaving El Paso and Burges, but when I got to Saks High School, the folks there turned out to be as wonderful as the friends I left at Burges. I finished High School at Saks. After graduation, the family moved to San Antonio, Texas. I went to U of Texas-Austin and San Antonio (Spent way too much time on beer and not enough studying I think). Finally, got a BS in Psychology (1982)and started right back on an MA in Industrial Psychology at St Mary's University(you really can't do anything with a BS in Psychology!) I started working for the Air Force Research Laboratory in San Antonio (civil service). While I was there, I met my wife Teresa. She was an Air Force Officer at the time. (thankfully she stuck around too!). I finished a Ph.D. in Industrial Organizational Psychology at Texas A&M University (1995) and went back to work for the Lab. By the time Teresa finally got tired of "dating" and co-habitating, I was 36. Yep 36. She agreed to something ridiculous like becoming my wife. Soon we discovered that we were going to have a son. He is 13 now and informed us that he would like a sibling. Didn't care much what it is, but he wants one. We were very fortunate to have an opportunity to adopt a little girl from Ecuador this past January (2008)and we all went to Ecuador in April and brought her home in May. She is fluent in both Spanish and English (already) and she turned 5 in October. My wife is convinced that she learned English so quickly to try and stop me from speaking and mostly butchering her native language! ;) We are truly blessed to have both her and our son! Of course, we're still in the queue to adopt from China and hope to get a little girl from there next year. You already know this, but all the jobs and work and such in the world can't compare to the multitude of blessings that children bring. We're happily living in Chandler AZ these days. I still ...Expand for more
work for the Research Laboratory in the Warfighter Readiness Research Division. It's an organization that has pioneered the development and validation of alternative approaches to training and exercising Air Force pilots and other operational personnel. The job and the people I get to work with are a total blast! Our organization is the last Air Force agency on a closed base that has been turned into an Arizona State University Campus (ASU-Polytechnic Campus). We'll be here until 2010. That's when the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission (BRAC), a truly fraudulent, tragic, and absolutely wasteful committee of incompetent, pin-headed bureaucrats who fritter way the taxpayer's money coming up with ridiculous schemes to "save money" for you, says we move from perfectly good facilities and successful research programs and support to Dayton Ohio to start anew. Oh by the way, to stay in AZ costs little to nothing. To move, at least $50 million to recreate the facilities we already have here, there. Yes, a perfect example of your tax dollars at work. Someone ought to be in jail for perpetuating this crap on the US taxpayer! I have names..... Sorry for that momentary redirect. Now, back to really important stuff. My wife Teresa works for a medical analysis company that does marketing research for drug manufacturers. She hails from of all places Birmingham Alabama, and I get back to that part of the country once in a while and we have wandered through Anniston and the Saks campus on several occasions. Lots of very good times. She is amazing, she is a great mom, works hard for her company and just this week (July 2 2009) she defended her Dissertation so she will get her PhD at graduation this fall! I could not do all she does and still keep smiling. I have also managed a few trips to El Paso and have driven by the campus on several occasions. Those were very good days! I hope everyone is doing well. The memories I have of my time and friends at both High Schools DO last! Thank you all for those. My email is on the web page - so drop a note. Its totally ironic that I develop high fidelity games, simulators, and training systems for the Government and I am more than slightly tech challenged! If it appears to be a while before I respond, trust me its not you...its me.....all the way.....no really ;) See ya! Winston "Wink" Bennett
