Yancy's Story

I am 50, married to Lanette Smith, have four children (three married), and two grand children. I work hard at scholarship and am preparing my dissertation for publication and publishing articles here and there. I have presented papers at international conferences, but I would like to study Georgian in Tblisi, Aremenian in Yreván, Hebrew and Aramaic in Israel and Greco-Roman culture in Italy. My best friend would tell you I'm a brilliant linguist, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as friendly, open, and helpful. The wildest thing I ever did in school was to quit high school in Colorado and hitch hike to Texas and never look back. Even though I never even got my G.E.D., I went on to College and eventually completed a PhD. I was dorky and unstylish as a kid. Still am. If I am ever stylish, it is by sheer accident. I prefer blue jeans, but sometimes I put on a sport jacket for shock value. My first crush went no-where. I was too shy and afraid of rejection, but the pain of that experience strangely gave me confidence. Lived from 1976-1977 in Leadville, Co. I met my Lanette in Abilene, TX when I was 14, and we became an item that year. We wrote letters and eventually we married In July 1977. We have four children: Jennifer, Heather, Matthew and Kara. All three girls are married to wonderful husbands who love them and God. We have two grandchildren, Sebastian and Joaquín, sons of Jennifer and José Machín. Matthew is living at home for now, trying to get a handle on his life. I attended Abilene Christian University, 1977-83, graduated Magna cum Laude with a B.A. in Biblical Languages. We were missionary apprentices from 1979-1981 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Reece and Jaquie Mitchell were our supervisors. We returned to Argentina as church planters and lived there from 1984 to 1993. From 1995-1998 I was on staff at Abilene Mission Church. We then planted Emmanuel Fellowship Churuch 1998-2003. During that time Lanette completed an M.S. in Speech Pathology. Then I attended Abilene Christian University from 2001-2003 graduating with a M.A. in New Testamment. We then moved to Fort Worth and I attended Brite Divinity School 2003-2009 graduating with PhD in Biblical Interpretation, May 2009. I have worked as a Bible Translation Consultant for World Bible Translation Center since 1998. In 2007 I became a full time scholar and translation consultant as a minister on loan from my church. In 10 years, I hope to be an accomplished author and gain greater expertise in my feild. I hope also to identify and help train a younger scholar to eventually take my place as a translation consultant. I'm going to get there by continuing to develop as a scholar, a leader in my church and my field and by investing in the next gene...Expand for more
ration of up and coming Biblical scholars. I wanted to be a minister when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a bad idea. As it turns out, they were wrong. It is a wonderful calling. I tell my children to follow their passion. If a person is faithful, wise, productive and dedicated, God will provide the resources for the hard worker to follow that passion. Favorite ways of blowing off steam: Visiting my grand kids! Working in the yard, talking with Lanette, and watching a movie together. Having a glass of smooth wine. Always, always, reading a good book. If there is something about me that I could do over, it would be to go back and somehow show more appreciation for the simple acts of kindness, patience, and helpfulness others have shown me. I hope my friends remember me as a kind person. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have a purpose larger than making money, an opportunity to travel, and a flexible schedule to be able to deal with the day-to-day. Jesus Christ is my hero, along with all the saints, but especially my mom. After high school I lived in Argentina for nearly 11 years, and the rest of the time in Texa, but I don't like to move. We are elders at Christ Fellowship Church. If I could improve my home, I'd remodel the kitchen and add on a sun room. My dream home would be the one I have. My kids continue to teach me a lot. Sometimes I think my girls are wiser than I am. Mrs. Reese, my fourth grade teacher was such and encouragement to me. If I won $100 million, I'd give 95 million of it to WBTC and my church, then spend the rest on retirement, travel and study. We payed our way through school and didn't have much time for anything else. The job I have is really my dream job. When I was a freshman I dreamed of being a Bibe translator. That is what I do and want to do till I die. But maybe I would also like to teach the next generation of ministers or Biblical scholars a bit, if I had the chance. The wierdest job I ever had was a period of time when I had 4 jobs: part time teaching Spanish in highschool, janitorial work, teaching Greek in university, and working on staff at a church. I share my home with Lanette and my son, which is sometimes trying. Finally completing my PhD at age 49 was my biggest victory. It was an up hill battle all the way, but it was done when it was done. My oldest friend is Brian McLemore, he married a friend of mine and we were in the mission field at overlapping times. He has been there for me to help me in times of major transition in my life. He is my boss. Don't have a HS diploma. My first job was at Quick Stop, Leadville, CO where I got paid 2.25 an hour to wash cars and pump gas. What I remember most about it is learning I didn't want to do that for the rest of my life..
