Zandra's Story
When I and my mom (Estella King-Apple) would make wasna, we prepared the dry meat first. (bpabpa). Then we picked the chokecherries and sent them through a metal grinder. We didn't smash them with rocks as i'm told some people still did in the 70's-80's. When they were ground, we mixed the pounded meat, which had separated into fine strips,and the ...Expand for more
ground chokecherries. We used a fat, preferably from a deer meat or buffalo meat, but cow was ok too. We usually added a little sugar, but not enough to change the taste too drastically.
We would mostly eat the paddies made from the mixture, but also rolled them into balls and froze them. Shoot! they never lasted til winter. Everyone ate them up.
