Alan's Story

WOW After highschool I jumped right into the education mode and went to MCC Having had a lack luster highschool perfromance I did well enough at MCC to get into Mizzou. I finally graduated with a BS in Forestry. I looked for a job in my field mostly in the eastern half of the country. I could have had a job in florida but I would have had to lie so I thought better of myself so I never persued my college dream. My folks had moved back to NJ and I had a short hiatas and then found a job. I worked in construction. I still know the 37 positions to lean on a shovel and look busy. I became a mechanic. I can weld, pipe fit, plumbing, electrical, rigging and for a time I was in the commerical water well business. Needless to say I wasn't happy in my quest for my niche in the world. I elected to enter the engineering field and started drafting instead of sweating for a living. I entered the field I am in now in the boiler business. I was working on a nuclear breeder reactor project and then 3 mile island melted down. Poof the nuclear business ended. I changed gears and worked on Fluidized Bed boilers. Big is hard to describe these behemoths. thier size is measured in acres. I left the large company syndrome and started working for a pe who only filed commerical boilers in new york city. I started there in 1981. Thats the year I was married too. I left the pe and struck out on my own in 1985 and I have been working for myself since. More on this later My social life was great and I had a charmed life. The money was great and along came Asbestos. I became an investigator and whoosh I had a 6 figure income overnight. I bought a yacht and my first benz in 1988. I smiled every time I drove that car for the first 6 months. My marriage ended in 1995. I didn't have children which I have always had regrets but that's life. I worked and played. I bought a bigger yacht in 1999 a 38 foot twin diesel flybridge motor yacht. It's great it has a bath tub. It only sips fuel 12 gph at 15 knots. Thats pretty good. Some of my boating buddies use 30 to 60 gph I figure either I go to the islands for a couple of vacations a year or go yachting all summer it costs about the same. In 2006 I remarried my present wife. She is from mainland china Presently I am trying to get her two teenage kids here. I interface with New York City Government agencies for arhcitects, builders, contractors, developers, engieers,... and zoning...Expand for more
consultants. I fit the square peg in the round hole. I used those skills in helping get my wife's children here. I did send a letter to my senator soon to be sec of state hilary but I think she had other activities she is persuing instead of my interests. Very soon I expect they will join us. I bought a house in dobbs ferry ny just before the real estate crash. the schools here are rate one of the best in westchester county. I am a member of the tarrytown boat & yacht club and I also own a slip in stamford ct on long island sound. I vasilate between the two berths. That's my story I have been blessed with lots of luck and now my wife makes me feel like a king. I still can't believe what I do for a living. I work a block away from the mayor's office. I sometimes wait 2-3 hours to see a city official. Than I have about 30-45 seconds to explain my dilema. Where upon I am grilled for details code sections and options that I am willing to give or reconsiderations from the code. I say " the spirit an scope of the law says' and fill - in the Boro commissioner on the details. Here is one instance I would like to share . 2007 I was called upon to get a Temporary Public Assembly for Conde Nast to host a chairty event in a vacant building that had lost it's utilities due to a steam leak. I had 6 weeks to perfrom my miracles. I did it and the $4000 a plate event went off with out any distrubance. Miracles are my specialty. Last october I enabled the Con Edison to turn on the gas for Yankee stadium. Yes my name is part of the stadium lore as I am the file rep for the plumbing work. Wow I never had an inkling that I would have such an interesting career. I am paid to hang out and shoot the breeze most of my day. My current billing rate is $300/ hr. I was thinking of raising it but then the crash came and well gas has gone down. So I'll just stay with it I have a web site and if you want to see what I see on the opening page is a picture of Manhattan circa 1994 on a sunny day. wow can't put your site in here what a bummer Ok you rocket scientists well you know my last name so it's my last name associates and then I had to register as an ii because some one else beat me and then the dot com on a more somber note I was 6 blocks away from the tragedy of 911. I wathced people jump form the burning towers to their deaths. It has changed me I will never forget that day. I hope you don't either. ciao alan
