Patricia's Story

I started working for the SocialSecurity Administration in1979. This was after I graduated from Wayne State and worked for the city of Detroit for a few years. I stayed single until I met the love of my life, Jim Moriarty. We met in 1990 and married in 2000 after what he refers to as a short courtship . We live in Clinton Township and I spend a lot of my time gardening and reading. I have three adult stepchildren and two beautiful grandchildren. To them, Jim is Papa and I am Babcia, the Polish name I called my grandmothers. Lauren is 13and Brendan is 10. DMy sister, Diane’s granddaughter, Kora, who is 11 sometimes joins us when Jim and I take care of them during the summer. I have lost both of my parents and two of my siblings. John died first at age 54, and Diane died at age 68 in 2016. I miss them all terribly but feel lucky to have two sibs still here, Lou who lives near Traverse City and Dori who lives in Grand Rapids. We all keep in touch. Since retiring in October 2014 I keep busy around the house and spending time with friends and my family. My husband retired in 2016 and we have been able to travel and spend a lot of time together, which I like. We plan to travel more and just do whatever we feel like doing. In April 2018, we planned a 2 week trip to Florida which turned out to be almost a month long. We were able to keep moving up our return date and the weather was glorious there and horrible in Michigan. Ah! Retirement! It's a funny thing. When I was a young woman, I just knew that I was going to marry, have kids, and be a teacher. That scenario was clear in my mi...Expand for more
nd up until my last few years of college. My dad died, my sister joined the navy and moved away, and my future was really unclear. Relationships started and stopped and the thought of marriage was pretty far from my mind. I got a great job with the federal government, and stayed single for a long time. Sometimes life was great, other times not too great. When I reconciled myself to being single and childless, and deciding it was up to me to make my life everything it could be, I met Jim and everything about my life changed. I found someone good and kind. A good father to his kids and a friend to his ex-wife. A man who made me laugh and feel special and loved. I hit the jackpot. And although nothing about my life ended up the way I had hoped and planned, my life turned out to be so much more than I could have imagined. The love of my husband and family made me rich beyond dollars and any success I have had is shown in my friends and family who are always there for me. I worked with fine people and in my work I was able to help people who needed it and provide kindness and care for others. My life turned out to be better than I ever dreamed it could be. My grandson recently told me that because I am old I am probably close to death. I Told him everyone was going to die and while my odds are better than his, I wanted to stay around for a long time. Life looms before us like an open book with blank pages waiting to be filled. I plan on filling pages and living this good life I've been given. And I just may surprise Brendan by living a long, long time. I love surprising him.

Tomorrow will have been my mother’s 96th birthday. She has been gone for the last 26 years but we all think about her and remember her beautiful smile. This is a photo taken about 1956. I am on the left, my brother John
