Food Prices in the 1950s

The 1950s saw a range of events that directly and indirectly contributed to the price of groceries throughout the decade. One example, although it started a little earlier, is the National School Lunch Act, which was launched in the late 1940s but continued through the 1950s. It required school lunches to include ½ to 2 pints of whole milk, causing an increase in the price. Processed foods also became more popular.

Here we break down what happened certain years as well as what the cost of food would have been. For reference, $1.00 would be around $10.55 today, and in 1950, a dozen eggs would be 60 cents, which is the equivalent of $6.50 today.

To see food prices in other decades, visit our list from the 1960s and the 1970s.

  • 1950: Cake mix was first introduced.
  • 1951: The average family income was $3,700, and the average family spent 22% of disposable income on food, which totaled $814.
  • 1952: 3 out of 5 families owned cars, 2 out of 3 had telephones, and 1 out of 3 had televisions.
  • 1953: The Korean War ended, and government spending rolled back. Interest rates were raised to curb inflation, decreasing consumer demand and leading to a recession.
  • 1955: Glass milk bottles were replaced with disposable paper cartons, and the microwave oven was first sold to consumers, which cost the equivalent of $12,000 today. On April 15th, McDonald’s opened, Coca-Cola® began selling soda to overseas armed services, and married women joined the workforce halfway through the year when job opportunities expanded.
  • 1956: Minimum wage was raised to $1 per hour, which was an increase of 25 cents.
  • 1958: Credit cards began to grow in popularity, and American Express launched an all-purpose credit card that could be used at stores, restaurants, hotels, and gas stations.
