Paul Reubens (born Paul Rubenfeld, August 27, 1952-July 30, 2023) was an actor and comedian. He graduated from Sarasota High School, in Sarasota, FL, in 1970, where he was active in performing arts and was named Most Talented as a senior. Reubens got his acting and comedy start in The Groundlings, in the 1970s, where he first developed the character Pee-wee Herman (for which he is best known). The character began to gain traction and publicity through a live show and HBO special, and Warner Bros. hired Reubens to write a film script. Pee-wee’s Big Adventure was released in 1985. A live-action kids’ show, Pee-wee’s Playhouse, followed in 1986 and soon became popular with adults as well as children. Reubens starred as Pee-wee one more time in a 1988 film sequel (Big Top Pee-wee). A career hiatus followed, but Reubens returned to pursue other acting projects, including the film Blow (2001) and appearances on Murphy Brown, Reno 911!, and The Blacklist. A new Pee-wee film was released on Netflix in 2016.
