Who is Jessica Chastain?
Jessica Michelle Chastain (born March 24, 1977) is a 48-year old American actress, producer, and feminist advocate. She was born and brought up in Sacramento, California in a middle-class household by her mother and step-father.

While Chastain had always had an overactive imagination, her true interest in acting began when she was just 7 years old when her grandmother took her to watch a production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. After deciding that acting is what she wanted to do, she used to direct and put up plays with all the other kids from her street.
When she was a teenager, Chastain was cast in a production of Romeo and Juliet by TheatreWorks, a professional theatre company, which officially kickstarted the career she had been dreaming about since she was a kid.
Where Did Jessica Chastain Go to School?
Elementary & Middle School Education
While the names of Chastain’s elementary and middle schools aren’t publicly available, we do know that she was a self-proclaimed weird kid (her words, not ours!) who ate orange and banana peels in the school cafeteria just so people would notice her!
In the same podcast where she revealed this information, she also called herself “nerdy and clueless, with a perm that made her look like Little Orphan Annie.”
High School Education
Chastain attended the El Camino Fundamental High School in Sacramento, California, but dropped out before she could graduate. As a misfit, Chastain struggled academically, and was a bit of a loner.
Did you know that she often used to cut classes to read Shakespeare? Her fascination with The Bard eventually led her to have too many absences to graduate. After dropping out, she did, eventually, get an adult diploma, but she never walked the stage at her high school graduation.
College Education
Having grown up in a family that often struggled to make ends meet, Jessica Chastain was the first person in her family to attend college. She studied at Sacramento City College from 1996-97, where she was highly involved in the drama program and the debate team.
After this, she attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, where she worked on her acting skills before graduating in 1998.
A major turning point came in Chastain’s life when she auditioned for the Juilliard School in New York… and got admitted! She received a scholarship, sponsored by none other than actor Robin Williams, a Juilliard alum. She graduated from this prestigious institution in 2003 with a degree in fine arts.
In 2025, Chastain enrolled in a Master of Public Administration degree at Harvard University. From being horrible at academics in high school to earning multiple degrees, she sure has come a long way!
