School cafeteria food. The phrase sure conjures up memories. Here’s a quick look back at some of most- and least-liked foods to be served on a cafeteria tray:
Best & Worst of School Cafeteria Food
Most-liked: Square pizza
It was nothing fancy. But there was just something about that square pizza that put smiles on many kids’ faces. Wonder if it would taste as good today…
Least-liked: Unidentifiable casseroles
Often vehicles for hiding leftover meat. Usually some of the least attractive entrees served, at least from a purely visual perspective.
Most-liked: Dessert!
Who DIDN’T try to trade away their fruit for another dessert?
Least-liked: “Captain’s plate”
Miscellaneous seafood, usually fried. A school cafeteria is usually not the best showcase for this particular meal. Enough said.
Most-liked: Waffles
Ah, the novelty of breakfast for lunch (even if you were basically eating Eggos). Usually with as much syrup as possible.
Least-liked: Overcooked vegetables
We’re betting more kids (teenagers included) would have eaten their vegetables if they hadn’t been cooked to a bland, mushy pulp.
Most-liked: Tater tots
Slightly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, these were a little more exciting than french fries. Even just saying “tater tots” seemed to make the day brighter.
Those 1970s hamburgers, made with added TVP
Often used as a meat “extender,” TVP added nothing positive in the taste or texture departments.
Most-liked: Chocolate milk
All the calcium. But CHOCOLATE.
