Bill's Story

Life Hanging out at the local pancake house (Uncle John's)or something like that. We would smoke pot in the parking lot and drink coffee and stay up till 2 am. Riding up and down Telegraph road with nothing to do but get in trouble. I remember riding up and down Telegraph road with Gary Calderwood in his Chevy 409 and drinking after we were both out of bootcamp and the police pulled us over and looked at the beer in the trunk and our military ID's and told us to get off the road with this beer and let us go! This was in 1968. Now living in Tennesee with my family. Recent activities include riding my motorcycle around the twisty roads down here and acting in the local plays in the community theatre here. School I remember smoking pot in 10th grade and sleeping my way through school. I squeaked through school with a 1.5 GPA and was surprised they passed me. I was just barely on the wrestling team and too small for football. I was never active in any school activities because of the attitude I had. Even with all of that, I felt I received a good foundation of education that helped me later on when I went to college. College After I got out of the service I started looking for a college to go to. Neil Armstrong was on the Bob Hope show on our ship and he stressed going to college because the Navy would pay for it. So I thought I would give it a try. There was a big pot bust at that time at a local college about an ...Expand for more
hour away and my mother said sarcastically "why don't you go there you would have a lot in common with them"? Well I didn't pick up on the sarcasm and thought she was serious, anyway I checked out this college in Georgia at that known as one of the biggest part colleges in the nation and decided to go there. Workplace After college I got a job as a teacher for 4th graders at Villa Rica Primary school. In Georgia you have to teach for 3 years before you can be a counselor in the schools. In 3 years I got a job in Rome Georgia as a school counselor for 3 years. I then moved up to Pittsburgh and worked for Pittsburgh Job Corps for 4 years, then started working for a community mental health agency for 11 years. I then move down to Tennessee where I worked for a community mental agency down here for 2 years and then started my own private practice as a Licensed Professional Counselor and have been doing that up to the present time. Military After I graduated from High School, I joined the Navy and for the first two years was on the aircraft carrier Ranger. We went to Japan, Phillipines, and Viet Nam, right off the coast. We had the Bob Hope show come on board and do a show. The next two years I was stationed on a Destroyer in Charleston SC. We went to Brazil, Africa, Pakistan, and toured in the Red Sea near Saudi Arabia. I did not like being in the service but it made me grow up and become more responsible.
