Richard's Story

After Benedictine, I completed all my education in Georgia in just 5 years. I received my bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Georgia. I discovered during my four years at UGa that college was a lot of fun. Therefore, I continued my education immediately upon graduating by entering the first class of students working toward a Master’s of Accountancy. I left UGa to start my career in accounting by moving to Atlanta and getting married, for the first time. I also used those years in Atlanta preparing for and passing the CPA exam. Just as I qualified for my certification, I was called to serve my time in the Air Force. It seems they wanted some time since they paid for my undergraduate work. For that I had to spend 90 days in Fort Walton Beach. I left Fort Walton Beach a single man and headed for Laurel, MS to begin the first of several accounting positions in various industries. I worked my way up to be a Chief Financial Officer, but finally, after more than a decade in accounting I discovered teaching and began work on my Ph.D. at Georgia State University. Oh, yea, I came full circle back to Atlanta. I could spend pages describing my working career both in accounting and education. However, this biography needs to include the passion I developed while in Mississippi. I have had an interest in drama since be...Expand for more
ing cast in two plays performed by my high school drama club. I became involved in a little theater in Mississippi. During this period, I was either acting, directing, designing and building sets or these in the four plays performed each year for two years. Then I was transferred and got married for the second time and drama became less important. Drama was less important until I began teaching at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Since full time instructors could take one course each semester for free, I decided to begin taking drama and theater classes. My fourth class was playwriting. Not because I had a burning desire to write plays, but because it fit into my schedule. However, I did have an idea for a play that came out of a conversation with a therapist friend of mine. The result of the class was my first play, The Toy Box, and the kindling for that burning desire. After 13 years in teaching, the Dean from my first teaching position called me to join her in government. Thus, I made my way to the Washington, DC and began a career in government accounting. Between writing The Toy Box and moving to DC, I got divorced and remarried. Working for the U.S. House of Representatives has been a real education in how our government is failing the American public. Now, I am just looking forward to retirement – real soon.
