Who is Steve Carell?

While Steve Carell is probably best known for his iconic role as Michael Scott on NBC’s The Office, failing to mention the rest of his career would be doing this iconic Hollywood actor, producer, writer, and director a major disservice.

And of course, where would he be today without his upbringing while growing up in Concord, Massachusetts that pointed him towards his Hollywood career!

What to Know About Steve Carell?

  • Steve Carell Education: At Middlesex School, Steve was a competitive athlete, playing both ice hockey and lacrosse. His love for history also began here, leading him to join the 10th Regiment of Foot reenactment group, shaping his academic path and his appreciation for detailed character work.
  • Collegiate Career: Before becoming a comedy icon, Steve was a serious history student at Denison University. He balanced his studies by playing goalie for the hockey team, DJing for the college radio station, and joining his first improv troupe.
  • The Second City Spark: Steve’s professional foundation was built at Chicago’s The Second City, where he was the teacher of his future wife, Nancy Walls, and a close collaborator with Stephen Colbert.
  • Global Superstardom: While The Office (2005–2013) made him a household name, he successfully transitioned into a versatile dramatic powerhouse, earning an Oscar nomination for Foxcatcher and critical acclaim in The Morning Show.

Their two children, Elisabeth and John, have both followed in their father’s footsteps at Northwestern University, where the family remains highly active in the university community.

Where Did Steve Carell Go to Elementary School?

Steve Carell’s elementary school was Nashoba Brooks School in Concord, MA. In an Office Ladies podcast interview with his The Office Co-Stars Jenna Fischer (Pam) and Angela Kissey (Angela),  he attributed his second grade teacher, Mr. Blackman, as the person who pushed him towards acting as a career.

Bestselling author Gretchen Rubin summed the story up perfectly on her blog:

“In the episode, …one listener asked Steve Carell if he remembered a favorite teacher. He answered that he particularly remembered his terrific second-grade teacher, Mr. Blackman. Steve Carell credits him as the person who got him interested in acting… the students were performing a little play, and as part of it, they sat in chairs and mimed that they were paddling canoes.

Steve started paddling, and then at some point, he changed the position of his hands to pretend to be paddling on the other side. Steve Carell says, ‘I’ll never forget it. He singled me out—it was the first time I’d ever been singled out in any way—and he gave me a pat on the back. He said, ‘Notice how Steve rowed on both sides of the canoe, so he wouldn’t go in a circle.’ Steve Carell said that something clicked.”

Where Did Steve Carell Go to College?

The vibrant Massachusetts high school grad decided to continue his education at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, studying history.

While attending his alma mater in the late-’70s and early-’80s, Carell performed in the student-run Burpee’s Seedy Theatrical Company improv comedy troupe. He also played goalie on the Denison hockey team for 4 years and was a DJ on the college radio station WDUB.

Steve Carell in the ‘90s

A young Steve started working towards his comedy and acting career as a part of the Chicago comedy troupe The Second City. He made a name for himself on the short-lived sketch comedy show The Dana Carvey Show, which only lasted for a few months on-air, but which is credited as helping to pave the way to Steve’s A-List status career.

Later, Carell did voice acting for the recurring animated character ‘Gary’ on the Saturday Night Live short The Ambiguously Gay Duo alongside his Second City understudy Stephen Colbert. He also was a correspondent on Jon Stewart‘s The Daily Show, and played in a few short-lasting TV series and started making guest appearances on other shows.

Steve Carell in the 2000s

Carell continued his role on the Daily Show through 2005, and had his first big break in Hollywood playing the weatherman in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. Anchorman director Judd Apatow was so blown away by Steve’s performance, that he enlisted him to star in the hilarious 40-Year Old Virgin.

‘The Office’ Tenure & Other Big Hollywood Roles

The sitcom continues to be one of the most popular shows ever made to this day, and he played a massive part in the series’ success.

He was paid about $175,000 an episode from season 2 onwards, once the show truly took off. He stayed on The Office until his contract terminated in 2010 and then went his separate ways (until he made a brief but wholesome appearance in the series finale.)

During the 2000s, Carell continued to act elsewhere during openings in his The Office filming schedule. He starred in Evan Almighty, Get Smart, and Little Miss Sunshine, and was a voice actor in Horton Hears a Who and Over the Hedge during this time.
