Matthew McConaughey: An Illustrious Career
Early Career
McConaughey first began acting in the early 1990s in television commercials and other minor television roles. In 1993, he landed his big break in the indie comedy film Dazed and Confused as David Wooderson. McConaughey was not originally cast in the role, but landed the part after meeting casting director Don Phillips at a bar, and subsequently meeting with director Richard Linklater and auditioning.
McConaughey gained significant praise for his performance, and was consistently cast in roles throughout the ‘90s, including Angels in the Outfield (1994), A Time to Kill (1996), and Amistad (1997). McConaughey was subsequently cast in a number of romantic comedies throughout the early-to-mid 2000s, including The Wedding Planner (2001), How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003), and Failure to Launch (2006), establishing him as a sex symbol in Hollywood.
Continued Success
McConaughey returned to more dramatic roles in the 2010s, most notably starring in Dallas Buyers Club (2013) as AIDS patient Ron Woodruff, a role that landed him the Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role.

McConaughey was raised by his mother, Mary Kathleen, a published author and former kindergarten teacher, and his father, James Donald McConaughey, who ran an oil pipe supply business after his NFL career did not work out. McConaughey’s parents divorced each other on two separate occasions, having remarried both times. He has two older brothers, Michael and Patrick, and was raised Methodist.
Married with Children
McConaughey met his wife, Camila Alves, in 2006.
