Thomas Earl “Tom” Petty (October 20, 1950 – October 2, 2017) was an American singer, musician, songwriter, and actor. Petty was perhaps best known as the lead singer of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He attended Gainesville High School, in Gainesville, Florida.
In 1976, Petty and bandmates released their first album, titled Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. This was followed up by the hit singles “Don’t Do Me Like That,” “Here Comes My Girl,” and “Refugee.” In 1988, Petty and his new band, the Traveling Wilburys, released their first song, “Handle With Care.” This led to the group’s first album, Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1. Petty enjoyed a successful solo career as well and also made guest appearances in 1997’s The Postman and in a 2002 episode of The Simpsons.
