If you love comedy films and shows, then you’ll probably agree that anything with Kevin James in it is bound to be a hit, not to mention, hilarious. Grown Ups (2010), Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009), and his long-running hit television show King of Queens (1998 – 2007) are fan favorites!

From his humble beginnings as a stand-up comedian to a widely-recognized comedy actor, here’s the life and career of Kevin James. Bonus: we have real high school photos of him, too, sourced from Classmates®.

Who is Kevin James?

Kevin James’s birth name is actually Kevin George Knipfing. The 61-year old actor was born on April 26, 1965, in Mineola, Long Island, New York, and grew up in Stony Brook, New York.

Throughout high school and college, Kevin was an avid athlete. But, a few career-ending injuries put a stop to his sporting goals. Back home in the summer of 1989, Kevin joined a community theatre play with a comedic role. He ended up loving the energy and positive response from the audience, which put him on the path of live performances, and, subsequently, stand-up comedy.

He became a part of his older brother’s improv group, realized he was quite good at the comedy thing, and began performing stand-up comedy at the East Side Comedy Club in 1989. He adopted the surname “James” as his stage name, to pay homage to his favorite teacher.

What to Know About Kevin James

  • Early Life & Education: Born Kevin George Knipfing in 1965 (current age: 61), Kevin James grew up in Stony Brook, NY. He was a standout athlete at Ward Melville High School, where he wrestled alongside WWE star Mick Foley, and later played varsity football at SUNY Cortland.
  • Career Beginnings: After back injuries ended his athletic pursuits, James pivoted to stand-up comedy in 1989. He adopted his stage name as a tribute to a favorite teacher and gained national fame after being discovered at the 1996 “Just for Laughs” festival.
  • Television Stardom: Best known for his iconic role as Doug Heffernan on the hit CBS sitcom The King of Queens (1998–2007), which earned him a Primetime Emmy nomination.
  • Film Success: A frequent collaborator with Adam Sandler, James has headlined several box-office hits, including Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Grown Ups, Hitch, and I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry.
  • Personal Life: James has been married to actress Steffiana de la Cruz since 2004. The couple has four children and resides in a luxury oceanfront estate in Delray Beach, Florida.

Where Did Kevin James Go to School?

High School Education

Kevin James attended Ward Melville High School in Setauket, New York. Did you know that Kevin and WWE star Mick Foley were peers in high school? Not only that, Kevin was also a heavyweight wrestling and football champion during that time. In fact, it’s said that he was better than Foley. Can you imagine?

Unfortunately, a severe back injury ended Kevin’s wrestling days, putting Foley at the top.

College Education

Kevin attended the State University of New York at Cortland as a varsity football star majoring in sports management. However, yet another back injury closed his athletic chapter altogether.

Three years in, Kevin realized that this wasn’t what he wanted to do with his life. He came back home and joined the theatre. The rest, as they say, is history. He never went back to graduate from college.
